Antonio Brown may have just created the most bizarre exit for the National Football League that we have ever seen. Think about what has happened in the last year with this guy and it gets your brain wondering hs there ever been such a personal collapse to such a huge star? Obviously we have the Colin Kaps and the Michael Vicks of the world but with this its a series of events one more stupider then the last that caused such a catastrophic fall.
Last year Brown was having a pretty good season and the Steelers were on the cusp of a playoff berth when POOF Brown is benched in week 17 which was a must win for the Steelers to get into the playoffs. As a Pittsburgh fan I sat with my jaw on the floor wondering what in the hell could have happened to have your best player in street clothes on the sideline in such an important game.
Fast forward and Brown decides he wants out of Pittsburgh and requests a trade after some turmoil with Big Ben and the coaching staff surfaces in the media. The Steelers organization deciding they have had enough of his antics agree with his request and Brown is shipped to Oakland for a few draft picks.
His time in Oakland was nothing short of a circus. In the first week of August he posts pictures of blistered feet on social media and explains this is what has kept him from practicing. A cryogenic therapy chamber is said to blame for this even though it can reach negative 200 degrees he thought it better to not wear shoes. A few weeks after that he loses his grievance with the NFL about his helmet also claiming he may retire but ultimately finds a replacement one he likes.
Now the first week of September is upon us and after the Raiders fine him $54,000 for missing practices, Brown posts a picture of the letter informing him of the fines online. His caption reads: “When your own team want to hate but there’s no stopping me now devil is a lie.” Brown then gets into an altercation with the letter’s author, Mike Mayock, the Raiders’ general manager. Reports in several news media outlets suggest that Brown threatened to punch Mayock. Brown then apologizes to the team but just a day later posts a video on youtube that had parts of a phone call with then head coach Jon Gruden. The phone call was very strange to say the least.
The Raiders decided that was enough and found a way to void any guaranteed money in browns contract which prompted him to ask for his release and within hours Oakland had let the troubled wide out walk and wasted two draft picks on him. It then took only hours for the Patriots to swoop in and sign Brown to a one year deal with 9 million guaranteed and all seemed to be right for Brown and he would start making headlines on the field instead of off once again.
Wellllllll, what had happened was……..Brown wasnt even a Patriot but a few days before he is accused in a lawsuit filed in federal court of sexually assaulting and raping a woman who worked as his trainer in 2017. He has denied the allegations through a statement from his lawyers. The league announces plans to investigate the matter and whatever they did caused New England to bail on Brown after playing just one game for them. At this point no team in the league wants to touch him for fear he goes on the exempt list and they are stuck with him and the bad publicity and distractions that come along with it. Has Brown worn out his welcome in the NFL or is this gonna be a case of time heals all wounds and a team in the playoff hunt makes a run for him. Time will tell but for now it looks like his future is murky at best.
